Food Pod for Humanity

Listen to our limited series podcast

Series 2 is out now!

Food is tightly woven into the economic, social, communal, and cultural fabric of New York City. And yet, the ever complex and dynamic processes, mechanisms, and people that helped deliver food from where it’s grown all the way to our dining plate largely remain abstract and hidden from view. The Food Pod for Humanity podcast is a place to explore the topics that meet in the huge space where food systems and climate change overlap.

Jochebed Louis-Jean and Dannie Dinh come to you from the Columbia Climate School’s Food for Humanity Initiative to discuss those topics with experts and a unique eye on New York City.

Series 2 is now out, with a special focus on plant-based diets and alternative proteins.

  1. Episode 1 sets the stage: Why is animal farming so bad for the environment and for people? Why should we cut down on meat and animal products in our diets? Mario Herrero (Cornell University) lays out the current state of animal agriculture and Matthew Hayek (New York University) puts all of that into the context of the climate.
  2. Episode 2 features Francesco Branca (fmr. World Health Organization), who explores the deep connection between planetary and public health with respect to what we eat, contextualizing the need for alternative proteins in our diets. Neeti Jain (fmr. NYC Mayor’s Office of Food Policy). digs into the many ways in which New York City has adopted that thinking in its real-world policy.
  3. Nil Zacharias, founder of Plantega, joins Episode 3 to discuss bringing plant-based deli classics to New York City neighborhoods by channeling our beloved and ubiquitous bodegas and food culture.
  4. Episode 4 features an interview with Gabe Huertas del Pino on the novel proteins that his company, Archway Pet, is sourcing to feed our furry friends. From insects to invasive fish species, he’s shining a light on sustainable and healthy—yet often overlooked—options for pet food.
