About Us
The Food for Humanity Initiative connects Columbia's climate science expertise with food systems research, education, and partnership — addressing the interconnected challenges of food security, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience.
Situated within Columbia Climate School, F4H operates through three integrated research pillars: Network Science reveals how climate shocks cascade through global food trade networks, exposing vulnerabilities that conventional risk assessments miss. Operational Intelligence & Forecasting develops decision-support tools — from humanitarian early warning systems to food systems dashboards — that translate complex data into actionable intelligence for policymakers and practitioners. The Living Lab provides hands-on learning integrating climate science with agricultural practice, from campus to city scale.
Our institutional partners include GAIN (Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition) and the FACT Alliance — a global network connecting researchers, NGOs, farming communities, and governments to drive innovation at the food-climate nexus. These partnerships connect F4H to applied programs and policy processes across more than 30 countries.
We train the next generation of food systems leaders through graduate education and applied research, while translating academic knowledge into real-world impact.
